Hyderabad: A discussion on the topic, including concerns about whether smartphones will become more expensive as a result of this action, was sparked by a recent media report that the Indian government had asked smartphone manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, and others to soon make their phones compatible with the Indian-made NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) system.

According to a Reuters report, the move requires hardware changes, which smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Apple fear will increase costs and cause disruptions. The report also stated that India’s government demanded the change in order to lessen reliance on foreign systems like the US Global Positioning System (GPS). Additionally, NavIC, according to the government, offers more precise domestic navigation, and its adoption would boost the economy.
